My Dining ... some of the places we like to eat

This is a new feature for 2018 so it will take a while for the list to build up!

Ann and I like to eat out twice a week! This is not because we are wealthy and like an easy life, there is a more practical reason. With Ann's health issues the process of going out to eat is positive for her and it also has the benefit of taking some of the load off me by my not having to cook two days a week. We have some favourite places and we thought it would be a nice idea to share these with other people, especially visitors to Dorset looking for good places to get a meal. There is a danger in this of course as everyone's tastes are different and what we find good may not suit others but there is no harm in having a go but don't complain if you don't like one of them!

To understand our reviews you need to understand what we like! We usually eat lunch times and we prefer quieter places. We avoid eating out in school holidays or, at the very least, we are careful where we go then; it's not that we don't like children, we just like peace and quiet now! We do not do 'fancy'', we are of an age where we like something straight forward but of good quality so you will not find 'high class' restaurants where what a meal looks like is more important that what it tastes like; we like our meat and veg cooked not raw!

Our favourites list contains a good number of Dorset pubs. Mercifully, the pubs in Dorset are generally privately managed or owned and each is unique, they do not follow the corporate brand of the 'chains'. Often you will find a that all the tables and chairs seem to have been collected from a number of different second hand shops, there will be an array of mixed pictures and photographs on the walls and the place just has its own character and history. Some are village pubs and do not pretend to be anything else, they are often family run and that, too, gives them their own style and culture.

I suppose these eating out places can be split in to three types:

  • 'Chip pubs' where the menu is simple and usually a selection of things 'with chips'
  • 'Dining pubs' where food is an important part of what they offer and often has a good range of 'non-chip' meals
  • Restaurants rather than pubs

The reviews are for places we like, we have not included any we find that we do not like as I prefer not to be negative as others may like what we did not. We may have also hit them on a bad day, even the best of them may have those. Instead we offer you our view of the places we like and go to the most. If you follow our recommendation we sincerely hope you enjoy the experience as much as we do.
