Martyrs Inn

We like Dorset village pubs and the Martyrs Inn is ertainy one that falls in to that category. Once on the main A35, Tolpuddle and Puddletown were by-passed some years ago now, probably 40 or more years ago, and the village is now a quiet Dorset community and the Martyrs doubles as a community hub and a dining pub. At lunch times it can be peaceful but I suspect that as they hold a number of special events to attract the locals it can be quite lively in the evenings.

As always, I think you have to have reasonable expectations in establishments like the Martyrs; you have to accept it for what it is. That said in my opinion the food here is on the higher side (in quality terms) of pub food and having been there over a dozen times since we moved here I can honestly say we have never left disappointed. Prices are on a par with similar pubs in other villages, the service is nearly always excellent and the surroundings are pleasant. The menu is not extensive, some might consider that there is a limited choice, but I think there is something for everyone in the selection available and I always think these village pubs are better concentrating on doing a small range of meals well rather than trying to provide a wide selection that pushes the resources in the kitchen past their limit.

The downsides? Nothing specific comes to mind other than to say there is probably a larger selection of burgers on the menu than other main courses! As I am not a burger fan that is of no use to me but if you like burgers then I am sure you will find one you love.
