Pines Hotel

Dorset has a long, impressive coast line and you might have thought that there would be lots of hotels and restaurants that would provide you with magnificent sea views whilst you eat your lunch or dinner. Surprisingly there are very few and apart from a small number along Weymouth sea front I can only think of three from Old Harry to Lyme Regis. One of those is the Pines Hotel up on the cliffs overlooking Swanage Bay with Ballard Down behind, the Isle of Wight distant across the sea to the east (if the weather is fine) and to Peverall Point on the south side of Swanage. On a sunny day it is a lovely location.

The hotel is not large and is family owned. It is well maintained, well run and has a very nicely decorated and furnished restaurant with large windows to enhance that panoramic view. The lounge, too, is very pleasant and a quiet place to rest after a walk along the prom.

Whilst not what some would expect from a hotel the cuisine is certainly better than most pubs and the prices of the lunches are not out of line with many of the local pubs so, given it has a view that the local pubs cannot provide, I reckon the Pines is good value. We tend to eat there during the week at lunch times when the restaurant and lounge are very quiet and we like that, you almost get personal attention. The lunch time menu does not provide a large choice but I reckon you would be hard pressed to find something not to your liking. The Pines is also one of the very few places we eat where we have a sweet, not because the main course is smaller than elsewhere but because the sweets are good!

On a Sunday they provide a carvery which is very popular and pre-booking is advised. The hotel also hosts some special functions from time to time so it is actually a good idea to check with them that they are open for lunches before you roll up!

We are very fond of the Pines and it is our 'special' place of choice for birthdays and anniversaries as well as just a quite lunch from time to time. There may be some downsides to it but we have never looked for them.
