Rose and Crown

We discovered the Rose and Crown totally by chance. We were having a bad day having gone to try an Italian Restaurant in Broadstone for the first time but they did not open for some reason and Broadstone is not an area we know very well so we were left floundering. We stopped at a pub we found up the road in Corfe Mullen but did not like the look of it much and so we headed to a pub in Lychett Matravers we had been to a couple of time is the past only to be told they do not do food on Monday's and Tuesday's! Fed up having not fed we decided to head home for a snack and to try again in the evening. I stopped to let a car turn across in front of me and noticed the Rose and Crown just ahead of us. We decided on one more try.

When we walked in the first thing we noticed was a homely feel to the place, nicely presented all round. Then we were delighted to be told that they were open for meals and a so we decided to give it a go. The menu was 'traditional' pub fare, nothing fancy and we had four or five dishes we would have been happy with. Having placed our order a visit to the loo was called for after driving around for so long and were struck by how clean they were. Back in the bar we read the notices for the coming entertainment evenings for the locals and looked at the various photographs of Dorset of old. Yes, we were in Dorset village pub territory, just how we like it.

The food did not arrive at once which is always a good sign, it shows it is being cooked especially for you but we didn't have to wait that long either. Ann's hunter's chicken went down well and she thought the chips were lovely. I had seen chilli con carne which was once popular on pub menus but seems to have been abandoned these days so I went for that and it was really good and yet not expensive. Indeed, the whole meal was, in my view, very good quality and very good value.

The Rose and Crown saved our day and we will be back there again it having now been added to our list of nice pubs.
