Holmebridge

Limited acces to the banks of the River Frome but a pleasant walk on a warm summers evening.

Holmebridge: Frome...ing at the mouth! - The original Holme bridge was bypassed by a new one some years ago and the old one now provides parking for a pleasant walk along the River Frome. Sadly, access to the banks of the Frome is very limited in its lower reaches and the walk from Holmebridge west to East Stoke affords only distant views of the river for much of its path. The footpath from Holmebridge to East Stoke is hard going in places, especially in winter and wellington boots are recomended for any time between November and April. It is especially difficult around Rushton farm where the farm yard is often deep mud!  Much of the wildfowl in the species list was seen when I was doing a bird survey for the Purbeck Keystone project between 2007 and 2010 where we had free access to rome along the river but you may not be so fortunate with views from the footpath. Not a great site but a pleasant walk on a warm summers evening.

After a grey morning we were treated to warm sunshine for our afternoon walk to Rushton Farm:

  • Acres of green pasture with no flowers and 'waste' ground around the farm covered in them!
  • Common field grasshoppers abundant and a few meadow grasshoppers too
  • Some butterflies about and surprised to see a marbled white; they seem to be everywhere this year
